“If you were in my position, you’d do the sa-“ Lindsay implored.
“I would never be in your position!” Helen wiped a hand over her face, tears welling in her eyes.
“Hey!” She defended.
“Go to Hell!”
Lindsay opened her mouth to makes some kind of retort, but upon seeing the distress in Helen’s eyes, she realised just how much this case was affecting her. They’d faced each other in court many times before. In fact they were pretty sure it was good for their relationship. A healthy, controlled environment to release steam. But Helen’s own faith clearly gave her an emotional edge in this one.
Helen cupped her face in her hands, trembling a little. Lindsay wrapped her arms around her, sniffling. “I-I tried talking to Hiller, but I can’t get out of it. And nobody else at the firm will take it either. There’s nothing I can do, you know that.” She said, softly, trying to convey her own sadness and regret, trying to convince Helen that sometimes she hated this job as much as she did.
Helen’s hands slipped down around Lindsay’s waist. Leaning back, she looked at the genuine sympathy in Lindsay’s face. Lindsay thumbed across her cheek. “But I can do this.” Tenderly, she tilted her head, pressing her lips to Helen’s. She could feel how much she was shaking, so rife with exhaustion, and overwhelmed with emotions. So rarely was she like this. Too caught up in maintaining the image of the dauntless, strong-willed Helen Gamble, it was hard for her to even admit to herself that sometimes she needed to let go. But Lindsay knew. They’d known each other for far too long to not be able tell the difference between the usual stresses of life, and when something was seriously, deeply upsetting.
Her breath shortened up, but Helen tightened her grip on Lindsay, feeling relief and release begin to course through her. She tugged on her bottom lip, feeling Lindsay walk them back over to the couch. Keeping one hand squeezing her lower back, Helen pushed the papers onto the floor, where they fell in disarray.
Helen let out a soft moan as Lindsay pressed her knee between her legs, pressure building through the thin fabric of her sweats. Moving from her lips, Lindsay sucked lightly at her neck. She felt both of Helen’s arms come over the top of her, hands trailing down her shoulders. Lindsay’s cold fingers elicited a shiver from Helen as they reached under her sweatshirt to undo her bra. Slowly, she rubbed at her nipples with her thumbs, causing her to exhale her remaining pent-up breath.
“Just let me do this for you. I-It’s killing me that I’m part of the reason you feel this way, so let me do this for you.” Moisture had settled in the corners of Lindsay’s eyes too now.
Squeezing her eyes shut, she nodded, giving her trust over, letting Lindsay be the one to release her tension, her fury, her pain. She gasped at the coolness of her exposed skin as her sweats and panties came down mid-thigh. She held Helen’s face with one hand, the other moving between her thighs. Gradually, she coaxed her to relax, hushing and whispering reassurances. Helen whimpered as Lindsay increased the pace, desperately grabbing back at her. Eventually she came, crying Lindsay’s name into her mouth. They kissed deeper now, with a renewed sense of energy, with a renewed sense of hope.
Helen sat up, pushing Lindsay further into her lap, one hand reaching under the nape of her neck, the other moving lower to her ass. She pushed against her, encouraging Lindsay to rock forward with peppered kisses along her jaw. They established a rhythm, Lindsay bucking, groaning at the growing friction. Helen repeated the sweet words Lindsay had said to her, and eventually Lindsay came pressing her face into Helen’s shoulder.
They broke away after a few silent moments accompanied only by the sounds of their breaths. Lindsay grabbed the tissues on the coffee table to clean them both up. Helen took the lead now to spoon her on the narrow couch.
“I love you.” She whispered in her ear.
“I love you too.” Lindsay murmured.
“I-I know this case is hard on you too, it just hurts more knowing that we feel the same way but we’re standing on opposite sides of the courtroom.”
Her head nodded against her, and she sighed shakily. “I-I have to give it my all tomorrow, Hiller will know if I don’t. But I need you to do everything you can to make sure he doesn’t walk. Please. Fight with me, Helen, not against me.”
Helen ran a hand through Lindsay’s hair, gently pivoting her head so she could face her. “I will.”
